Bénjad makes it two-in-a-row for Kernow

This Easter at the 42nd Pan Celtic Festival in Carlow, Ireland, St Austell singer/songwriter Bénjad won the International Song Contest for Kernow/Cornwall. He was the first artist to win the competition twice. He was presented with a cheque for €1500 and a glass trophy made in Carlow.Benjad

The Celtic nations of Brittany, Wales, Ireland, Isle of Man, Scotland and Kernow battled it out in a 'Eurovision'-style competition, in front of six judges, one from each country. The judges awarded marks to each performer except the one representing their own nation. Marks were awarded for music, words and presentation – with each song being newly-written for the competition.

Bénjad's entry was a sad song of a Cornishman whose love, a Breton, was lost at sea in a shipwreck. The song is about longing to sail to Brittany to feel close to his lover, and reflects the close historical links between Kernow and Brittany. The winning song can be viewed on YouTube.

Last year Bénjad won the competition with 'Mordid Bewnans' (Life's Tide) about a sailor from Porthscathow. Also in 2012, Bénjad won the prize for the best newly-composed song in the traditional made, with his entry 'Ow Moren Dhigeudh' (My Merry Maiden) based on the legend of the girls turned to stone for dancing on the Sabbath.

Bénjad composes and performs songs in English, Cornish and Spanish and has released an album 'Tre Arta' (Home Again) available to buy on itunes, Amazon etc. Also released is a single in aid of charities working in the aftermath of the Japanese tsunami. He has just been offered a place at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag (Royal Conservatoire of The Hague) to study singing. The artwork for the physical copies of both CDs was painted by Porthpean artist Alan Arthurs, and CDs can be purchased at Atishoo Gallery in Charlestown, Gribbin Gallery at Polkerris, as well as through CDBaby.com and from the Bénjad facebook page.

The Pan Celtic Festival is held each year to promote Celtic languages, sport, music, dance, heritage – Celtic culture in all its forms.
